Don’t get burned: a guide to safe device charging and portable heating

RALEIGH COUNTY, WV (WOAY) – A fully-charged phone or overheated portable heater isn’t worth a burned home.

They can become highly flammable.

“People put a pillow or a blanket and their charger in their phone and sleep with it under their pillow,” said Sofia Fire Department Assistant Safety Officer/Firefighter Natasha Smith. That is a major fire hazard. You never know when one of the wires is going to get too hot and spark off.”

According to Smith, also be extra cautious with electric heaters, kerosene tanks, kerosene heaters, and propane heaters.

“Make sure you are following the owner’s manual if it says to turn it off after many hours,”
the assistant safety officer said, adding that it could become a safety hazard.

Such as burning a building down, the devastation of losing your home, or a life.

“You don’t want to do that. Always make sure you’re checking your chimneys too; those chimney fires can lead to a disaster as well,” the firefighter said. “Remember to never leave your home with an electric heater running unattended and always unplug your mobile phones from the charger.”
