Oak Hill, WV (WOAY) As many West Virginians enjoy the state’s waterways this summer, it’s vital to remember the potential for drowning in or near any body of water.
The American Red Cross has a few tips to keep yourself and children safe:
- Natural environments are less predictable than pools, so be sure that all swimmers are adequately water competent.
- Always watch for currents, waves, and underwater obstructions while swimming or standing.
- Enter unknown or shallow water feet first, and only dive in water at least 9 feet deep with no underwater obstacles.
- Always swim sober and with a buddy. Those supervising children or other swimmers should remain sober and undistracted.
- Also be sure to know what to do in a water emergency, including how to help a swimmer safely, call for emergency help, and perform CPR.
