Dangerous day on the roads with all types of precipitation, frigid temperatures overnight

Good morning folks. Southern West Virginia is bracing for a messy and dangerous day of winter weather as multiple types of precipitation sweep across the region. Rain, freezing rain, sleet, and snow are all in the mix, creating a complicated situation for many of our communities. As of this morning, rain is falling in our southernmost areas, while freezing rain is being reported elsewhere. Snow is primarily limited to the highest elevations. However, more towns are expected to transition to freezing rain as temperatures hover near or below freezing in many locations. This raises significant concerns for power outages, as ice accumulates on power lines and trees.

Freezing rain is the most dangerous element of today’s weather, with accumulations ranging from 0.01 to 0.5 inches expected by this evening. Even small amounts of ice can lead to treacherous road conditions, and thicker accumulations can cause tree limbs to snap and power lines to fail. As we move into the evening hours, we expect all freezing rain and sleet will transition to snow.

About 1-3″ of snow is expected for most communities, with 5-10″ for the highest elevations. While snow accumulations are not expected to be substantial, they will contribute to the icy conditions already on the ground, making travel nearly impossible in many areas. Roads will be hazardous and should be avoided unless absolutely necessary.

Prepare for potential power outages by keeping flashlights, batteries, and blankets on hand. Charge all devices and avoid using outdoor generators indoors to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. It’s also a good idea to check on elderly or vulnerable neighbors who may need extra assistance during this storm.

Be sure to stay tuned to WOAY for the latest updates and forecasts throughout the day. For those in affected areas, please prioritize safety and stay indoors as much as possible. Stay safe, Southern West Virginia!
