It is another sunny, but cool and breezy afternoon around southern West Virginia.

Highs are going to wind up in the mid-50s, with the breeze making it feel even cooler. Tonight, it will be cold again with lows in the mid-30s. Frost is possible but will mainly be confined to any wind-sheltered spots – the winds staying breezy will keep the frost to a minimum.

Tomorrow will be a similar day to today, with highs again in the mid-50s, and a good breeze out of the west. As the day goes on, high pressure will begin to settle over top of the area. That will calm the winds by the evening, and with that, lows tomorrow night will drop to near or a bit below the freezing mark. With that possibility, the National Weather Service has issued Freeze Watches for Friday morning for the southern coalfields through Summers and Monroe Counties. By the time we get to tomorrow night, other counties could be included as well. The bottom line is the same either way; it will be a cold night in the area!

Our football Friday night will be cool, and with the sun setting earlier, the jackets and sweatshirts will come in handy all game long. By Saturday morning, another widespread freeze is a possibility. Overall, however, the weekend will be a shade warmer than what we’re expecting the next couple of days. Highs will push 60 degrees by Sunday and get above that level in the usual warmer spots.
Later in the forecast, a pair of systems will push towards the area. One is coming from the southwest, and it should pass by with the showers associated with it remaining to our south. A few of them might impact the southern coalfields and Tazewell County, and we’ll track them for you if they do pop up.

The second is coming from the more typical northwesterly direction, and that one will give us chances for rain by Tuesday and Wednesday.

As for temperatures, we’re expecting to stay below the normal through the entire extended forecast and beyond.
