Cold with snow tonight, warmer later

OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – The snow is still flying this evening around the area, but unlike yesterday, the snow is in bands as the lake effect off of Lake Michigan is the dominant driver in our weather. That means that the snow will be off and on rather than almost non-stop as it was yesterday.

Any additional accumulation should be light, but underneath the snow bands, visibility will be cut down quite a bit, so care should be taken if you’re headed out to any St. Patrick’s Day plans this evening. Lows will be very cold, generally in the lower to middle teens.

But temperatures will rise a bit as the night goes on, as winds will shift around to the south.

That will also turn off the lake effect snow machine.

The winds shifting around to the south will also begin the warmup that will take us through the early part of the extended forecast. Tomorrow, we’ll top out in the lower 40s in most areas, about 15 degrees warmer than it is this afternoon. By Thursday, we’ll be in the lower 50s, ending off the traditional workweek around 60 degrees for the high, and some locations will reach 70 degrees by Sunday! A cool front does knock the temperatures back down as we end the forecast, but highs will still be near the normal, not in the 20s like we’re seeing today.
On the other side of the coin, warmer does not mean less active. A number of disturbances and one front (as we mentioned above) will come into the region and trigger chances for showers. But with the warmer temperatures, these will fall in the form of rain instead of snow. If there is any snow, it will either be in the highest elevation areas, such as Snowshoe, or will fall early in the day and will change over to rain as temperatures warm up – something that might happen next Tuesday.
