Tracking snow tonight and tomorrow

OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – The snow is really coming down this evening around southern West Virginia, especially in the higher elevations and in areas along and to the northwest of the spine of the Appalachians. While the severe weather did not develop in our area, the snow on the back side made up for it by accumulating to a half foot or more in many areas. Here at our Oak Hill studios, we had picked up 4.5″ as of 7:15 p.m., and it was still snowing!

And we’re not quite done yet. The first part of the snow is attached to the low that is passing to our north. This is the usual backside snow that wraps around the low-pressure centers and is brought down from the eastern Great Lakes. Tonight, the snow should taper off a bit, but we’ll keep the cold air that is being brought down from Canada. We’ll see lows drop to levels that we haven’t seen in a while. They’ll generally be in the upper teens and lower 20s, with some wind to make it feel even colder.

Tomorrow, the snow setup is the lake effect snow that comes with a strong northwesterly flow off of Lake Michigan.
While it will add more snow to totals wherever it falls, the banding means not everyone will see it. The upsloping provided by the mountains also enhances the banding. With the possibility of more snow, large parts of the area remain under a Winter Weather Advisory through tomorrow.
Highs tomorrow will remain cold; we’re forecasting 28 degrees in Beckley. That’s a full 25 degrees below the normal! Other areas might reach 30 degrees, but everyone should stay below freezing throughout the day, the first time for that since February 23rd. Lows tomorrow night will be even colder than they’ll be tonight by a few degrees.
Warmer weather is finally in the forecast starting in the middle of the week. We finally get close to the normal by Thursday, and temperatures go up from there into the middle 60s. The weather continues as well, but with warmer temperatures come rain chances, not snow.
