OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – After a very cold start to the day around southern West Virginia (Beckley dropped to 31 degrees this morning and Bluefield dropped to 35), it turned into a nice day around the region. Highs wound up in the upper 60s and lower 70s in most areas, with some middle 70s in parts of the southern coalfields.

Tonight, we’ll see lows in the upper 40s and lower 50s, about 20 degrees warmer than it was this morning.

Tomorrow, we’ll pick up a chance for showers and storms as a front comes into the region from the north.

The front does not push through the region, in fact it barely pushes into the state, but it will trigger a few showers and storms. Because the front will be to our north, that’s where most of the rain will be as well. Unfortunately, that means that areas that are in the most severe drought will not be seeing much rain with this system.
Even the areas that pick-up rain won’t see much; a half inch or so would be about the most that any location can expect.

The best thing to come out of the system for most of us will be to reduce the fire danger a bit.
On Thursday and Friday, the chance for showers and storms will stay to our north, although one or two might sneak into the area. Temperatures, meanwhile, will push towards 80 degrees once again, especially on Friday.
The weekend ahead will feature good chances for rain on both days. This is due to another, more potent, front that will arrive Saturday afternoon and evening from the Pacific coast. This front has some moisture from the Gulf to work with, and it will give us decent rain on a much more widespread basis.

The one thing it won’t do is drop the temperatures more than a few degrees as the cold air from Canada that gave us this morning’s freeze is bottled up to the north.

Early next week another low and associated front zips through the region and drops more rain. While the wet weather pattern is not good for the outdoor plans, it is good in terms of helping with the drought, although the expected rain totals are not high enough to end it.
