Cold Temperatures Last Through Mid-Week Before Potential Weekend System

The temperatures will remain cold through mid-week, with temperatures dropping into the single digits with wind chills into the negative teens for some areas overnight Monday into Tuesday. Below Average conditions will continue through Tuesday before a warm up into the 40’s heading into late week.

Once we hit Saturday, a lot of questions loom. Several models, along with the CPC (Climate Prediction Center) hint at a storm system moving across the US. With an arctic blast likely to be digging through the US during that timeframe, a winter storm appears possible for some people.

Timing looks to be the only thing we have at least some confidence in, as of now, it definitely appears to be a weekend event (Jan 24-25th). The type of precipitation that Southern West Virginia receives and the totals are very dependent on the exact track, which are all still up in the air.

3 possible solutions:

1) The center of the storm tracks near I-20 and through Atlanta. If that happens, then Southern West Virginia will see a wintry mix out of that, with snow, sleet and freezing rain all being a major issue across the state.

2) The center of the storm tracks in between I-20 and the Gulf Coast. If that’s the case, then Southern West Virginia would likely see mostly to all snow out of that. Again, totals are way too volatile to dive into specifics right now.

3) The center of the storm tracks along the Gulf Coast. If that happens, then Southern West Virginia could completely miss out on the precipitation that occurs with the system, and would mainly be an issue for parts of Virginia, into North/South Carolina.

Then again… the storm system might not even be there. But with multiple models now starting to pick it up, I will be under the impression that a storm system of some sort will likely be in the US during that timeframe.

Here’s a look at that 7-day forecast. We will remain mostly sunny Monday-Wednesday. A little system looks to impact our region late Wednesday night (after midnight) and into Thursday morning, before clearing back out Friday. The cold will stick around at least through Tuesday though, before we see temperatures rise above freezing. The temperatures and precipitation chances over the weekend are still variable and in question as we await the development of that potential storm system.

Stay tuned as we will continue to have updates on the development of the weekend weather.
