Calm today, but stormy weather lies ahead

The skies are clearing as we go through the afternoon around southern West Virginia. Despite the sunshine in the skies, temperatures now are much cooler than they were 24 hours ago at this time.

But the cooldown is only temporary as a warm front swings through the area and drives the highs back into the 60s and 70s. But with the warmer weather comes a chance for showers and storms. The front doesn’t make it through the region, but instead stalls to our north, leaving temperatures warm but allowing a series of disturbances to ride along the front, giving us multiple chances for showers and storms. Here is the situation on Thursday during the afternoon drive. There is a significant threat for flooding in areas along the Ohio River, but we’ll have to watch for some isolated areas of flooding as well.

At that point, some of the storms could be strong to severe and the Storm Prediction Center has placed most of the state in the “Slight” risk category for severe weather. Damaging winds are once again the main threat, but large hail and an isolated tornado can’t be ruled out.

Even after the severe weather threat goes away, the chance for showers and storms will continue through the rest of the extended forecast. One thing that changes? The temperatures. Eventually, the cool air invades the area as the stationary front breaks down. Highs will be close to and even a few degrees below the normal by early next week.
