Bluefield’s annual New Year’s Eve Lemon Drop

BLUEFIELD, WV (WOAY)- Everyone knows of the ball drop in New York City for New Year’s Eve but watching it on tv doesn’t feel the same as watching it live, because of that many places around the country have their own version including Bluefield. About 10 years ago they started the lemon drop. The reason they drop a lemon is part of their history.

“So back in 1939, we were renowned as the nation’s air-conditioned city. And being that we had a mild climate historically, we rarely get to 90 degrees. And if we do get to 90 degrees, since 1939, we serve free lemonade. And so the lemon has been an integral part of our city’s history. And therefore, that is why we drop the lemon,” Gabrielle Ponder, the Executive Assistant to the City Manager

While they won’t have lemonade to drink at the event, they will have hot cocoa, candy canes, and a DJ for everyone to enjoy. The event kicks off at 11 pm and will run till about 12:30 am New Year’s Day.
