Blizzard Conditions at Snowshoe; Active Weather Continues

WOAY-TV (Oak Hill, WV): The day has started off on a calm and breezy note, but winter is rearing its head once again later today. After the calm morning, a low-pressure system carrying rain, ice, and snow will be pushing through the region. Snow will be persistent in the high mountains while rain will change to snow later for the rest of the region.

A Blizzard Warning will be in effect from 10 AM today to 10 AM tomorrow for western Pocahontas and western Greenbrier counties. Heavy snow and wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour are expected across our highest elevations. Fayette, Mercer, Nicholas, Raleigh, Summers, Tazewell, and Wyoming counties are also under a Winter Weather Advisory from 10 AM today until 10 AM tomorrow.

Travel will be treacherous for the evening commute, especially in the high mountains. Please be careful and stay weather aware as rain switches to snow across the region. Meteorologist Christian Boteler has the details:

Snow will linger into Thursday morning, accumulating some more before leaving the region late morning. Overall, the mountains will have the highest snowfall totals by far with ridgetops in the central part of the region getting good amounts as well. The rest of the region will accumulate less, but disruptions are expected across the region. There will be a brief break from the winter weather tomorrow afternoon, but it will be cut short Thursday night into Friday. Another low-pressure system will bring more snow and rain into the region, continuing the active weather pattern ands furthering travel disruptions. This system will drop snow through the day with some southern counties switching to rain later in the day.

As we begin the weekend, partly sunny skies bring some calm into the forecast. However, yet another system will pass through the region late Saturday night into Sunday, causing even more disruptions for any weekend travelers. This system will be the quickest, only lasting until late Sunday morning, but it will cause issues as roads glaze over with snow and ice again. Thankfully, this will be the last round of active weather for a few days, as Sunday afternoon through all of Tuesday will be inactive with mostly sunny skies returning by Monday.
