McDowell County, WV (WOAY) An update now from McDowell County, where school officials say all lockdowns have now been lifted.
According to McDowell County Schools, campuses were placed on lockdown earlier today at the direction of 911 and the McDowell County Sheriff’s Department after an anonymous tip reported a possible threat toward Iaeger Elementary School.
Out of an abundance of caution, law enforcement asked all schools in the county to initiate lockdown procedures while officers responded and conducted safety sweeps of each campus.
School officials say staff quickly followed established safety protocols, and law enforcement responded to ensure the safety of students and staff.
District leaders say they understand situations like this can be frightening, but regular safety training helped staff and students respond appropriately.
Officials say they are continuing to work with law enforcement as the investigation continues.
