Charleston, WV (WOAY) – Attorney General JB McCuskey is warning residents to be on the lookout for price gouging in the wake of the devastating weekend flooding.
On Sunday, Governor Patrick Morrisey declared a state of emergency for Ohio and Marion Counties following severe flash floods that claimed lives, destroyed homes, and left thousands without power or water.
Amid the declaration, the state’s price gouging laws are now in effect, which means no individuals, businesses, or contractors can increase prices on essential items or services by more than ten percent of what they cost just ten days ago.
The legislation includes food, emergency supplies, and cleanup services.
“My heart breaks for the people impacted,” said McCuskey. “These laws are in place to protect folks from being taken advantage of when they’re most vulnerable.”
Anyone who believes they’ve been overcharged is encouraged to file a complaint by visiting ag.wv.gov or by calling the Consumer Protection Division at 1-800-368-8808.
