Another Hot Day; Storms Return Tomorrow

WOAY-TV (Oak Hill, WV): Another mild morning will be followed by hotter temperatures this afternoon. Highs are in the mid- to upper 80s across the region, which may affect people who are sensitive to heat or work in the heat for extended periods. Water, sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses are recommended this afternoon due to the hot temperatures. If you are working in the heat, be sure to take breaks in the shade. Listen to your body for symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke as well. While these temperatures are not equivalent to a summer heatwave, they are hot enough to cause heat-related illness.

For those not looking forward to these hotter days, there is some relief on the way. However, that relief is not coming until tomorrow afternoon. Meteorologist Christian Boteler has the details:

Tomorrow morning is trending on the drier side, but cloud cover will limit atmospheric instability during the afternoon and evening. The cold front will reach our region in the afternoon, bringing widespread showers and thunderstorms through the rest of the day. The Storm Prediction Center has placed most of the state, including our viewing area, in a marginal risk. Even with the cloud cover expected tomorrow morning, there are some ingredients for strong to severe storms in the afternoon. This risk is on the lower end, but something to be aware of tomorrow.

Decent available energy and steep lapse rates could lead to isolated storms with damaging winds and hail. Tornadic activity and flooding are not likely. The risk of severe weather is slightly more pronounced to our east, but a couple strong or severe storms cannot be ruled out in our communities. The window of activity will be tomorrow afternoon and evening before the sun sets. Storms will weaken overnight, ending the severe weather threat for our area after the cold front passes.

After the front passes through on Wednesday, more showers and storms will come in behind it. These will be weaker due to the lack of sunshine, among other things. These weaker showers and storms will allow us to soak up the much-needed rain without much concern for a few days. The rainy pattern will last through the rest of the week and into the weekend. Showers and storms will continue to develop in the region as the front that passes us on Wednesday becomes stationary in the Carolinas.

This lack of movement will be caused by a Bermuda High, simply a high-pressure system in the middle of the Atlantic. With this high in place, the front will eventually retreat north, passing through the area once more as a weaker warm front. This is the primary reason we’ll experience rain through Memorial Day weekend. If you have plans for the weekend, consider an indoor backup plan in case of storms and showers. This rain is much-needed and will help with our drought recovery. It will also make for a few great napping days. Here’s the 7-Day Forecast:
