West Virginia (WOAY) The American Red Cross is experiencing a severe blood shortage, reporting a 35% drop in its blood supply.

The organization is now urging blood donors to give as soon as they can to prevent delays and save lives.

The Red Cross is especially seeking donations for blood types O, A negative, and B negative.

According to an official media release, high flu activity nationwide and inclement winter weather have been making it difficult for donors to give.

The shortage has led to hospitals making difficult decisions in deciding how to distribute critical blood donations.

Without adequate access to donations, patients are facing serious health risks and delays in critical life-saving care.

The organization is teaming up with the National Football League (NFL) to offer for some extra incentive to donate this winter.

Donors who give blood between now and January 25 will automatically have a chance to win an all-expenses-paid trip for two to Super Bowl LX.

Donors who give between January 26 and February 28 will earn a $20 gift card to the retailer of their choice.
