A Breakdown of Cold Weather and Winter Weather Statements

WOAY-TV (Oak Hill, WV): With the next few weeks being majorly cold and snowy, let’s take a look at the warnings, watches, and advisories you should be on the lookout for from the National Weather Service and here at WOAY.

Cold warnings are issued when the temperature and/or wind chill reaches dangerous levels or are expected to reach dangerous levels: Here’s a quick breakdown of each:

Extreme Cold Warning: Take Action! Dangerous cold temperatures and wind chill are occurring. Avoid going outside, and bundle in several layers if you need to go out.

Extreme Cold Watch: Be Prepared; Dangerously cold temperatures and/or wind chills are possible. Gather proper supplies and adjust outdoor schedule as needed.

Cold Weather Advisory: Be Aware; Cold Weather is expected, so dress appropriately and make sure loved ones take precautions

Winter weather warnings are issued when snow, sleet, and ice are expected across a certain area. Depending on the severity, they will issue the proper warning, with Winter Storm Warnings being the most severe. Here’s a breakdown of each:

Winter Storm Warning: Take Action! Snow, Sleet, or Ice expected, take caution traveling.

Winter Storm Watch: Snow, Sleet, or Ice possible. Be prepared with supplies.

Winter Weather Advisory: Wintery Weather expected. Exercise caution and being aware.
