WOAY-TV (Oak Hill, WV): Morning conditions have been on the calmer side with minimal rainy activity. Some stray showers have moved through, but fog is more widespread so far. Remember to use your low beams and drive carefully if you encounter visibility issues. Fog will dissipates later this morning, but cloudy skies remain through the day. A cold front is approaching and will pass through later today, but we will not observe a decrease in temperatures until tomorrow. Showers and storms develop in the afternoon and evening, continuing the rainy pattern that started late last week.
Plentiful moisture in the atmosphere results in potential heavy rainfall. Soils are already saturated in some spots, and more rain on the way, leading to localized flooding concerns. Ponding of water is likely in some spots, and other impacts are possible in vulnerable spots. Repeat downpours are also possible, exacerbating the risk a bit more. Along with the flooding risk, a couple of storms have the potential to become strong. This chance is low, but a storm or two reaching gusts of 60 miles per hour is not out of the question. The window for any strong storms will be this afternoon and evening. After sunset, the chance for any additional severe weather is near zero. Meteorologist Christian Boteler has the latest:
The approaching front will pass through, but it stalls just after passing us. This lack of movement will turn this front into a stationary front, which allows the system to influence the weather around it for a couple of days. As a result, we are expecting more rainy and stormy activity through Thursday. Showers and storms will carry the potential for heavy rain through the next few days, extending the risk for localized flooding in our area. Tuesday will bring the highest rain chances, and each day after will bring slightly lighter showers and storms. Despite this gradual decrease in activity on Wednesday and Thursday, the majority of our area will receive good amounts of rain this week.
Gloomy and rainy weather continues, but there is some good that comes from this pattern. Severe weather chances will be minimal due to persistent cloud cover and continuing storms. There will be less energy in the atmosphere, limiting the strength of storms. Another, more tangible benefit will be a drop in temperatures. Tuesday highs will reach the mid-70s, but Wednesday and beyond only reach the 60s. Nighttime lows on Wednesday will reach the 50s, and this trend lasts through the weekend. The drop in temperatures is quite timely, beginning right on tomorrow’s Fall Equinox.
Rainy weather does eventually fade out of the region Thursday evening, finally giving us some sort of break. Clouds will part overnight, allowing plentiful sunshine to return on Friday. Skies will remain mostly sunny all of Friday, giving us the nicest weather we have had for Fabulous Football Friday so far this year. In addition to the sunshine, temperatures remain very comfortable. Most areas will range in the mid-60s with a few spots reaching the upper 60s.
