Showers and Storms Continue; Temperatures “Fall” on Equinox

WOAY-TV (Oak Hill, WV): Showers have been passing through the region overnight and early this morning. These conditions warrant a rain jacket or umbrella for the morning commute. Temperatures are remaining in the mid-60s this morning, continuing the trend of mild September mornings. Fog is not widespread, which is good news. Unfortunately, mostly cloudy skies and rain will be sticking around through the day.

Activity peaks in the late afternoon and evening, similar to yesterday. Storm strength is trending weaker than yesterday, which should keep severe weather just to our south. A stronger storm or two is possible with gusty winds, but storms breaking severe criteria is unlikely.

The main concern for today and the rest of this rainy pattern is flooding. Plenty of moisture remains in the atmosphere, and soils are already saturated. Areas that have already experienced flooding or are vulnerable will be most at risk for water issues. A Flood Watch remains in effect for Fayette, McDowell, Nicholas, Pocahontas, Raleigh, and Wyoming counties until tomorrow morning. Meteorologist Christian Boteler has the latest:

Showers and storms will continue through Thursday morning. This extended streak of rainfall originates from the front that passed through the region yesterday. It has passed through the region, but it stalled to our south. This stalling behavior allows more showers and storms to develop within the region. Thankfully, this front’s passage means the severe threat is slim, but heavy rain remains a concern. On the bright side, temperatures will become very comfortable. Highs will remain in the mid-60s while lows dip into the 50s and upper 40s.

Wednesday will be another gloomy, consistently rainy day. Activity will have ups and downs, but your rain gear is warranted once again. However, Thursday is looking a bit better. Showers linger in the morning, but activity will begin to clear in the afternoon and evening. Eventually, the rain will dry up, and clouds will begin to dissipate overnight. Thursday will mark the end of the rainy pattern, which is good news.

Friday will be a gorgeous end to the work week. Mostly sunny skies will be featured with brisk morning temperatures and a comfortable afternoon. Highs remain in the mid-60s while lows remain in the upper 40s, giving us a great intro for the fall season. These nicer conditions will last this weekend, allowing our area to dry up a bit. Any weekend plans will go off without issue. Temperatures rise a bit on Monday, warming us up into the lower 70s. The next few days will be subpar, but the trade-off is quite nice.
