OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – We saw a few showers and an isolated storm or two around the region today. The other big story in the weather today was the heat. Highs wound up in the 80s again region-wide; that’s around five degrees above normal. Lows tonight will be mild as well, generally in the mid-to-upper 60s.
The heat that we saw so frequently during August (for a full explanation, see below) will stay with us as we start September, with highs pushing towards 90 degrees again. As for the rain chances, even the high-resolution atmospheric models that we look at aren’t picking up on any showers. I think there is a chance for isolated showers, but as was the case today, any showers that do pop up will be few and far between.
Wednesday will be a rinse-and-repeat day around the region, and we’ll turn up the heat even further, with some areas getting above 90 degrees! Will it be another lemonade day in Bluefield – where they give out free lemonade when it reaches 90 degrees at the Mercer County Airport? While it will be very warm there too, I don’t think we quite get there in the “Air-Conditioned City”. To complete the tropical summer-like feel to the weather, lows will be around the 70-degree mark, and humidity levels will be high.
The next chance for showers and storms will be on Thursday night and Friday as a front will approach from the northwest.
Some of the storms on Friday in particular could be severe, with damaging winds serving as the main threat. Of course, any storms that develop could also drop decent amounts of rain quickly, making flooding another concern. The exact timing and intensity of any potential severe weather is something that we’ll be keeping a close eye on this week. The Storm Prediction Center has placed much of the region in the 15% risk area from Friday into Saturday.
Once the front is gone, the rain chances will again be lower and the showers more scattered and driven by the heating of the day. Temperatures will cool off, with highs in the upper 70s and lower 80s. Lows will be closer to normal as well.
AUGUST 2026 SUMMARY – ANOTHER WARM MONTH
With today being the last day of August, we can look back at the month to get an idea of how it went temperature-wise. So far, four of the seven months this year have been above normal, with January, February, and May finishing below normal. Although it is not official, it looks like we’ll end up warmer than normal this month. Of the 31 days in August, 24 featured above-normal highs, six wound up below normal, including that brief taste of fall early last week, and one was right on the normal. As for the lows, four days were below normal (all in a row from the 23rd to the 26th), and the rest were above normal.
