WOAY-TV (Oak Hill, WV): Mild and foggy conditions kick off the work week. Fog will begin to dissipate later this morning, burning off around 10 AM. Remember to travel carefully and to utilize your low beams when driving through fog. Skies remain mostly sunny through the day, starting the week off on the right foot. There is a chance for stray showers and a rogue storm this afternoon, but the odds remain low for our area. Most, if not all, of our area will remain dry. Any activity that does form will remain brief and weak. High temperatures will reach the mid-80s this afternoon, which is above average.
Conditions will feel warmer than usual today, but this is just the beginning of the hot streak. Temperatures will be on an upward trend for most of the week, which will result in the development of an early September heatwave. These conditions will not be ideal for those sensitive to the heat or working outside for an extended period. Remember to have plenty of water and sun protection through the week. A high-pressure system continues to make its way into the region tomorrow. This system, which we may also call a ridge, will pass by during the middle of the week. This will not only bring warmer temperatures, but will push the stray showers to our northeast. Afternoon temperatures in the mid- to upper 80s and drier conditions will be the result of this system’s approach. The peak of the heat will remain on Wednesday and Thursday, resulting in high temperatures breaking the 90-degree mark. Heat related illness will be a concern through Thursday due to the persistent hot temperatures. Those who are sensitive to the heat should stay indoors unless travel is necessary. Overnight temperatures will remain in the upper 60s and lower 70s, which will not bring the relief we will need.
The heatwave will last for a few days, but relief is on the way late this week. Thursday will feature some isolated showers, but heat remains the main concern. The next frontal system makes its way into the region on Friday. Scattered storms and showers will bring some relief, mainly during the afternoon and evening. While this chance remains on the lower end, it will be our best chance for rain. Along with the rain, the frontal system may drag some cooler air into the region.
