Showers Linger; Hotter and Drier Pattern Later

WOAY-TV (Oak Hill, WV): Showers are continuing to drop rain in our southern counties this morning. Rainfall is lighter, but ponding of water in vulnerable spots is still a possibility later in the day. As a result, a Flood Watch is continuing in Mercer and Tazewell counties until 8 PM this evening. Along with stray showers, patchy fog is lingering for a couple more hours before dissipating after the morning commute.

Showers and a few stray storms will continue to develop, eventually reaching the northern half of the viewing area later in the day. However, rain will likely stay light and should not cause widespread issues. Any thunderstorm that develops will also remain weaker. The remaining bundles of showers and storms will dissipate this evening, ending the rainy pattern we have experienced for around a week now. We will have a few drier days this week, which will help us recover from excess rainfall. The changing pattern will result in warmer temperatures by mid-week. Meteorologist Christian Boteler has the details:

A high-pressure system will settle into the region tomorrow. The system brings warmer air and drier conditions, allowing a hot and dry pattern to develop for the majority of the week. Tomorrow will be mostly sunny and bearable as temperatures only reach the mid-80s. High temperatures increase again on Wednesday and Thursday, reaching the upper 80s and even 90 degrees in some low-lying communities. The warmer temperatures will last until this weekend due to another pattern change in the works.

It will not be as humid as the heat wave during the first week of the month, which should keep the region out of a total heatwave. Most areas will remain at or below 90-degree heat indices, which is notably less hot than what we saw during the first week of the month. Since there is less moisture in the atmosphere, the high-pressure system should be enough to keep us out of the rain until Friday and the weekend. Even without the excess humidity, plenty of water and sun protection is needed for those heading outside for extended period during the second half of the work week. It will be beautiful, and I encourage heading out and enjoying the nicer weather safely!

There is a low-end chance for a few showers to pop up on Friday, but the best chances of rain will develop during the weekend. The high-pressure system will collapse later in the week, which is quickly followed by a low-pressure system moving through the northeastern states. While the center of the low-pressure system will be well to our north, it will bring a cold front into our area during the weekend. This front will bring showers and storms through the region this weekend, and a few thunderstorms are likely to become strong to severe with damaging winds. While there is no designation from the Storm Prediction Center as of now, these warmer patterns usually end with stronger storms. We are keeping an eye on the system for this weekend.
