OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – It was a very pleasant Thursday around the region, with plenty of sunshine and slightly warmer-than-seasonable temperatures. The warming trend continues tonight as lows will wind up in the middle to upper 50s, warmer than the previous couple of mornings. The one thing that we’ll keep is the chance for some patchy fog in the valleys.

Tomorrow, the warm-up continues as highs will be a couple of degrees warmer than today, generally in the lower to middle 80s. As usually happens, parts of the southern coalfields like Pineville will get closer to 90 degrees. The dry weather will also extend through Friday and into the weekend as high pressure dominates the weather early on.

The weekend will be a mixed bag weather-wise as the warm and dry weather continues through most of Saturday. Late Saturday night and Sunday, the first of a series of systems approaches the area from the northwest. Some of the storms to our northwest on Saturday could be severe, but I think we’ll avoid that. A few rumbles of thunder are possible along with gusty winds and small hail as well, but severe weather should be confined to areas to our north and northwest.

The chance for rain continues into next week as the front stalls out near the area thanks to high pressure that will keep the east coast cities dry. How dry we stay will depend on how close the front can get to our area, as it will serve as the trigger point for showers and storms.

It looks like there will be more than 1″ of rain over the next seven days, if the atmospheric models that we look at are to be believed.

There is some uncertainty on this point, however. Any rain that we get will be good, as the latest drought monitor – released today – shows that the drought continues in all areas, although there was slight improvement in portions of Pocahontas and Greenbrier Counties.
