WOAY-TV (Oak Hill, WV): A few scattered showers are passing through this morning, mainly in the southern half of the viewing area. Along with the slippery roads, fog will be an issue this morning. If you end up traveling through dense fog, drive slower and use your low beams until you are clear of the fog. Another “not-so-great” aspect of the weather is temperatures staggering in the low to mid-60s this afternoon. While this is not chilly, it will feel brisk in the gloomy conditions. Today would be what I call a “nap day”, and a really good one at that. If you do have plans, a rain jacket or umbrella will be handy.
What’s to blame for the gloomy conditions, or what should we thank for the much-needed rain? Look no further than the Bermuda High. This region of high pressure is blocking the front that passed through our region on Wednesday. As a result, the front has become a stationary front in the Carolinas. This front will eventually move out of the region, but it will bring daily rain chances through Monday before it does. Meteorologist Christian Boteler has the latest:
Memorial Day Weekend will continue the rainy pattern. The stationary front is expected to retreat backwards into our region on Saturday. This will bring some warmer air into the region, raising temperatures into the upper 70s by Sunday afternoon. Other than the change in temperature, the weather will feel very “samey” through the weekend. The only break from the rain will be on Sunday morning, and even then there will be scattered showers that become widespread later in the day. If you have weekend plans, have an indoor backup plan and keep an eye on the skies. Memorial Day itself will be rainy and gloomy, but the front will be moving out of the region by Monday night.

Despite the front moving out Monday night, rainy conditions continue. Another round of showers moves in on Tuesday, bringing widespread showers into the region during the afternoon and evening. Rainfall continues Wednesday and even Thursday morning. These conditions may be a bit inconvenient for some, but are certainly helpful for our region. The only concern for this weekend and early next week would be the risk of minor water issues in vulnerable spots. This next week or so of rain will not eliminate the drought, but it will likely bring us some recovery in next week’s drought monitor update. Here’s the 7-Day Forecast:
