West Virginia Citizen Action Group files motion to join as a defendant in DOJ lawsuit against West Virginia regarding release of voter information

Charleston, WV (WOAY) Community advocates are asking a federal court to allow them to join a lawsuit over voter data in West Virginia.

The West Virginia Citizen Action Group filed a motion Thursday to intervene as a defendant in a case brought by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) against the state.

The lawsuit stems from West Virginia’s refusal to provide certain voter information requested by the federal government.

According to state officials, those requests include sensitive data such as dates of birth, addresses, driver’s license numbers, and partial Social Security numbers.
The Justice Department filed the lawsuit in February, naming Secretary of State Kris Warner in his official capacity.
West Virginia is among several states facing similar legal action.
The Citizen Action Group, represented by multiple national legal organizations, argues that the data should remain protected and is raising concerns about voter privacy and federal authority over elections.
Supporters of the motion say the case could impact thousands of voters across the state.
