There are strong to severe storms this evening around southern West Virginia. Some of the storms tonight could contain strong winds, as we can see with the radar.

The fuel for these storms is the summer-like conditions that we’re seeing today around the area. We find ourselves to the south of a front that is pulling up stationary over the upper Ohio Valley. It means that temperatures are very mild this evening.

It also means that the air has quite a muggy feel to it, as dewpoints are in the 60s in most areas.

It all adds up to possibilities for more strong to severe storms around the area. The area is not even in the “Marginal” risk category for severe storms according to the Storm Prediction Center, but a few storms may reach or exceed severe limits, nonetheless. Damaging winds are the main threat with any storms that do become severe. In addition, areas to our east and west are at greater risk for severe storms than we are – something to consider if you’ll be on the road in those areas tomorrow.

There will be several rounds of these strong storms that make their way through the area over the next couple of days.

By the time that it’s all said and done, there will be heavy amounts in rain in some areas. So flooding is a concern for some of the poor drainage and low-lying areas. Luckily, the rain is fairly spread out and since we haven’t had rain in a while, it should be able to run and be absorbed enough to keep flooding to a minimum.
So, the bottom line is that the indoor plans will be our best bet this weekend. If you’re able to get out, keep the umbrella handy and keep an eye to the sky.
