WVU Tech students speak out on international students losing their visas

BECKLEY, WV (WOAY)- Several West Virginia University students have had their student visas terminated by the government. Students at WVU Tech are sad about this happening to their peers, saying that they [the international students] are people too.

“I go to school with these people every day, and these are some of my best friends. I know of some of them,” said Alex Sexton, a Civil Engineering student. “I mean, it really sucks because these are my classmates and like, really good friends. I would just say like, know they’re people too. They go to school here and some of them are practically almost about to graduate and then they just have to leave. So it’s kind of crazy to me. And again, like some of my best friends, so kind of sad in general.”

International student Andrea Moreno says the process for obtaining a visa to go to school in the States is very complicated. It’s something they fight to have.

“It was a real hard process. Like, it takes time, you need to have a lot of documents, and proof of money [to show] that you can be here and you can survive [financially],” said Andrea Moreno, an international student and computer science major. “And yeah, it’s a whole process that is complicated. It’s something that you need to think about before you go to get one. Know that they’re so important for us, like that visa allows us to be here and study and learn about the life and it’s so important for us. Like it’s not just a paper either, you know, this is something that we fight to have.”
