West Virginia (WOAY) – The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources is reminding families that the minimum age restriction for youth hunters has been lifted ahead of September’s Youth Hunting Season.Â
Children of any age can now participate in special youth seasons, as long as they’re accompanied by a licensed adult, age 18 or older.
While an adult may help a child handle a firearm to teach safe practices, they cannot carry one for hunting.Â
WVDNR Director Brett McMillion says hunting is a time-honored tradition in the Mountain State, and encouraging kids to experience it early helps preserve that legacy.Â
The youth squirrel season opens first on September 6 and 7, followed by youth black bear and deer hunts, waterfowl seasons, and spring turkey in April 2026.Â
Youth hunters ages 15 to 17 must still meet all licensing requirements.
All youth big game harvests must be checked using the hunter’s own WVDNR account.Â
