West Virginia (WOAY)- The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (WVDNR) is joining the national crackdown on boating under the influence during the Fourth of July weekend.
From July 4 to 6, Natural Resources Police officers will participate in Operation Dry Water, a national campaign to prevent alcohol—and drug-related boating accidents.
Officers will patrol West Virginia’s lakes, rivers, and reservoirs, looking for impaired boaters with a blood alcohol level of 0.08 or higher—the legal limit under both state and federal law.
Violators could face fines, jail time, loss of boating privileges, and even license suspension.
WVDNR Police Captain Warren Goodson says, “Boating under the influence puts everyone at risk. If you plan to drink, plan and designate a sober operator.”
According to the U.S. Coast Guard, alcohol remains the leading factor in fatal boating incidents, and being on the water only intensifies the effects of impairment.
Boaters are also reminded to check safety gear, wear life jackets, and avoid swimming near shore-powered docks.

Stay safe and sober on the water this holiday weekend.
