FAYETTE COUNTY, WV (WOAY)- Recently, we reported on the new cell phone policy for Fayette County Schools this coming school year. That policy has received some backlash due to safety concerns from parents.
This policy comes after Governor Morrissey signed House Bill 2003 into law. This gives schools the right to implement cell phone polices such as this.
The incoming superintendent of Fayette County Schools says that parents and children should not worry about safety. This is because of the communication systems they have in place already.
Though there are people who question if there will be exceptions to this policy. Incoming superintendent Warvel says yes, there will be, and it’ll be on a case-by-case basis for each student.
“[If you’re] a type one diabetic and you use your cell phone to see your blood sugars, that’s an exception to the policy. Then that’s what that would be use for. If you are a college dual credit student and you need to use your phone for an authentication code to get into your classes, that means then we would allow the cell phone to be used,” explained David Warvel, the future Superintendent of Fayette County Schools. “So that’s academic or medical. There are exceptions to every rule or policy. So we will work with everybody to inform them.”
