West Virginia WIC program will remain open amid government shutdown

West Virginia (WOAY)- The West Virginia Department of Health says the state’s Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program will remain open despite the ongoing federal government shutdown.

WIC clinics will continue providing food benefits, nutrition education, breastfeeding support, and referral services until further notice.

Historically, West Virginia’s WIC program has stayed open through past shutdowns. However, officials say this one falls at the start of the new fiscal year, meaning clinics can only operate as long as funding is available.

The Department of Health is exploring all options,  including redirecting existing funds to keep these essential services going for West Virginia families as long as possible.

A prolonged shutdown could temporarily impact families’ ability to spend WIC benefits at retail or farmers market locations.

Participants and retailers will receive automated updates through the WICShopper app or by visiting dhhr.wv.gov/wic for the latest information.
