West Virginia American Water issues boil water advisory for over 6,300 customers following water main break

West Virginia (WOAY)- West Virginia American Water (WVAW) issued a precautionary boil water advisory for approximately 6,329 customers.

The advisory includes CAMC Plateau Medical Center, Oak Hill High School, Oak Hill Middle School, Fayette Institute of Technology, New River Primary School, and St. Peter & Paul Catholic School for the affected area between the City of Mount Hope Interconnection on Legends Highway, near US 19, and the Maple Lane crossing with US 19.

All primary, secondary, and tertiary roads from US 19 inside the service area are affected.

A water main break through the night resulted in a principal tank emptying.

Service is expected to be restored by noon on November 8, 2024.

WVAW advises that impacted customers boil their water before consumption until further notice after services are restored.

Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms that may be present in the water.

Customers should bring water for drinking, cooking, bathing, and brushing their teeth to a full boil for at least one minute and cool it before use.

West Virginia American Water also recommends the following:

  • Throw away beverages and ice cubes if made with tap water;
  • Keep boiled water in the refrigerator for drinking;
  • Provide pets with boiled water after cooling
  • Do not use home filtering devices instead of boiling or bottled water (most home water filters will not provide adequate protection from microorganisms).
  • Use only boiled water to treat minor injuries.

Once the system recovers, West Virginia American Water will collect additional water quality samples in the outage area.

These samples require a minimum of 24 hours for analysis.

Customers will be notified in the same manner once the analysis is complete and the advisory can be lifted.
