OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – We’ve seen numerous showers over the past few days as a cool front pushed through the area earlier in the week, followed by a series of disturbances riding the general middle-level flow from southwest to northeast. These disturbances have moved over the state just off to our north, over the Ohio Valley. There is plenty of moisture for any showers and storms that develop to work with, and with the persistent showers and isolated storms, rain totals have been impressive over the past few days in some spots.

The good news is that, according to the Doppler radar estimate of rainfall over the past few days, the areas that have picked up the greatest amounts of rain – parts of McDowell County in this case – have been the areas that are in the highest level of drought.

Looking ahead to the weekend, more showers and storms are in the forecast. On Saturday, the number of showers will be smaller than it has been over the past couple of days, but everyone will see a good chance for showers at some point during the day, especially later on.
Sunday, another low-pressure center will approach the area from the west, and ahead of the low, a warm front will pass over the area. That will raise the temperatures into the mid to upper 70s, quite a bit warmer than they were either yesterday or today. Behind the warm front, the frequency of the showers will increase, and the chance for thunder will go up as well, especially later in the day as a cool front approaches from the northwest.

On Memorial Day, the chance for rain stays elevated as a weak cool front tries to move through. The front stalls out, however, and the lingering boundary will even further enhance the chances for rain. We’ll need an umbrella for the holiday plans, even if there will be occasional breaks in the rain.
