Weekend outlook: warm to start, then stormy

OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – It has been another mild day around southern West Virginia today, with highs in the 70s for most areas.

Tonight will be similar to the past few nights, with lows near 60 degrees.

We start the weekend with some very nice weather. Most of Saturday should be nice, with highs around 80 degrees. There will be sunshine early in the day, but the clouds will return by the afternoon ahead of the next front coming from the northwest. By tomorrow evening, the clouds will roll in, and the showers will soon follow.

As we go through Sunday, the front arrives, and the rain comes down. Some showers will be heavy at times, and there could be strong storms along the line.

The chances for strong storms are very small, but are not zero. If any storms do become strong or severe, damaging winds will be the main threat, along with localized flooding. The chances for large hail are very small; for tornadoes, the chance is almost zero. We’ll be tracking any storms that do pop up, along with any other weather-related issues that might pop up.

The line should clear the area in the early afternoon, and the skies will become mostly sunny. High pressure will take control of our weather, and with the high-pressure center sitting over the western Great Lakes, colder air will flow into the region from Canada. With the cold air finally making its way into the area, temperatures will stay steady or even fall slightly during the afternoon. That will lead to quite a chance from what we see on Saturday. The high will only be around 60 degrees, a 20-degree drop from Saturday!
