OAK HILL, WV (WOAY)- We’ve been reporting on the different types of scams police have been warning on. Scams have become more sophisticated over the past few years due to AI and technology advancements. Here are some ideas on what to look out for so you don’t get scammed.
Scammers have upped their game by using AI to create different types of phishing scams, like through email or text.
A type of these scams is the ‘accidental text’ scam, where an unknown number will text you asking “how you’re doing” or “I’m running 15 minutes late,” seeming like someone accidentally texted you instead of someone else. It’s recommended not to respond to those, as someone could be trying to get personal information, or even just to know if the number is valid and active, so they can come after you’re information later on.
The next type of scam could be hard to spot, as these are commonly used in day-to-day life, QR codes. Some scammers place QR codes in spots and make it seem legit, and steal the information you enter. The best way to avoid this scam is to verify the source of the code before scanning, like checking if it’s a sticker on a poster or using a reliable QR code scanner that can detect malicious content.
Last but not least is SIM swapping. This is when a thief gets your number reassigned to a phone they control so they can log in to your accounts. The best way to avoid that is to set up a PIN code with your provider that only you know.
While there are scams everywhere, it’s good to be aware of them to protect yourself and your assets.
