It is a mixed bag of weather around the region this afternoon. Some areas, mainly in the southern coalfields and Pocahontas County, are seeing showers with isolated storms thrown in for good measure. There, we’ll have to slow down as we head out to our evening plans.

Other areas are seeing no rainfall and warm temperatures, generally around 5-7 degrees above the average high for this time of the year. Tonight, we’ll continue to see a chance for more rain area-wide as a front approaches from the northwest.
The front will have plenty of moisture to work with as the warm, moist air continues to be pulled into the region from the Gulf. The Weather Prediction Center (WPC) has placed the southern coalfields in a level 2 risk for excessive rainfall from Wednesday into Thursday, meaning that flash flooding is a possibility. Two of the atmospheric models that we look at have wildly different solutions in terms of the rain totals over the next 48 hours. As you can see below, the area inside of the yellow shape on the graphic on the left is the approximate area that WPC thinks could possibly see flash flooding, if any does occur.+

I believe that chances for any type of flash flooding are small, but as always, we’ll be tracking it for you. With the higher chances for rain, temperatures will go down a bit, with highs in the lower 80s. Lows will be in the mid-60s.
As we go into the weekend and beyond, the rain chances will decrease as the front stalls to our north and high pressure takes over. The showers and storms will be in a typical summertime day/night pattern, something we’ve seen regularly over the past few weeks. After some sun in the morning, showers and storms will pop up during the afternoon and evening. With the extra sunshine, highs will creep up into the middle to upper 80s on Monday and Tuesday of next week.

The wild card in the forecast beyond the seven-day period is Erin. Currently a tropical storm, Erin is expected to be a major hurricane by the time it passes off to our east by the middle of next week. But how close does it get? We’ll keep tracking it for you.
