BECKLEY, WV (WOAY)- From school being out, to family vacations, cookouts, or just lounging in the sun, it’s the time of year to be out and about.
Although just like how you go out when it’s warm out, criminals are using that to their advantage. According to the Raleigh County Sheriff’s office, breaking and entering and burglary are some of the crimes that happen more frequently this time of year.
Summertime makes it easier for these crimes because the weather is nicer. Sergeant Epling, with the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Department, recommends having cameras around your home. He also recommends locking up anything outside to prevent it from being stolen. Although these crimes can happen anywhere, even when shopping.
“[When] you bring your items out to your car, put them in your trunk. Don’t let them lay in the backseat because then the criminal will walk by, check the handles of the door, see if they’re unlocked, and they’ll steal your stuff,” explained Sergeant Gary D. Epling, the Chief of Detectives for the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office.
With that, it’s recommended not to leave your stuff in your trunk for a long time.
“They are out there watching you and they can do anything they can [to steal your stuff], especially as some of these people are professionals at it,” said Epling. “They can pop that trunk open and grab all your stuff.”
Epling emphasized the importance of making sure you lock your car or home anytime you are not there. Remember, if you’ve been a victim of a crime to contact your local police or sheriff’s department for help. As always, if it’s an emergency, please contact 911 as soon as possible.
