Volunteers distribute virtual camp supplies to roughly 100 children

A group of volunteers just finished up a virtual camping project in McDowell County.

The Highland Educational Project designed a summer program for kids where each week they take home a box of supplies filled with activities. On August 21, the volunteers distributed activity boxes to roughly 100 children in McDowell County.

The project’s director Mary Green says the endeavor has been a way to help children while they’ve been out of school.

“Because of COVID, they haven’t been in school since March. So the program has not only allowed them to have resources coming into their home every week, it has also allowed teachers they know and adults associated with their school to be able to come in and say hello to them.”

The program started near the beginning of the summer, and today marked their last activity box distribution.
