Virginia (WOAY)-As Memorial Day weekend approaches, Virginia State Police are seriously reminding all drivers to stay safe, drive smart, and stay sober.
Starting Friday, May 23, Virginia State Police will participate in Operation C.A.R.E.—the Crash Awareness Reduction Effort, a national campaign focused on reducing crashes, impaired driving, and other risky behaviors.
The enforcement period will continue through Monday, May 26, at midnight.
The Commonwealth is also participating in the nationwide Click It or Ticket campaign. In 2024, Virginia State Police issued 535 seatbelt violations and 112 child restraint citations over the holiday.
State police say all available troopers and supervisors will be on patrol this weekend, working to keep roadways safe.
With AAA Mid-Atlantic forecasting more than a million Virginians hitting the road this Memorial Day, officials say traffic will be heavy and tempers may run short.
Nearly 90 percent of holiday travelers will be driving.
During last year’s Memorial Day weekend, state troopers issued over 3,500 speeding citations, charged 1,400 drivers with reckless driving, and made 92 DUI arrests.
Fines collected from citations go toward court fees and Virginia’s Literary Fund, which helps support public education and teacher retirement.
