Tonight’s weather: between two storms

We are seeing a break in the snowfall as we are between systems this evening. A quick inch or two was seen in many areas from Beckley north with the last clipper type system. Another two systems will be zipping through the region over the next day or two. The first is a quick mover, another clipper system that will drop some additional snow, mainly in the northern parts of the area.
The second system will bring more widespread snow beginning Wednesday evening and lasting into Thursday morning.
By the time that the last of these systems are gone, some areas in Pocahontas County will wind up with more than half a foot of additional snow. Many areas in Nicholas County will see 3-5″ of snow and some parts of Greenbrier and Fayette Counties will as well. In Beckley and Oak Hill, 1-3″ is more likely, with less in the southern coalfields. Travel could be difficult during a time period where many people will be out on the roads. Be careful and have a way to stay tuned to the weather if you’re planning to be out tomorrow night.
With the possibility for heavy snow and high totals, the National Weather Service offices that cover our area have issued both Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories for parts of the area. These begin tomorrow afternoon and go through Thursday morning.
Temperature-wise, highs will be in the lower to middle 30s after lows will be upper teens tonight and lower to middle 20s tomorrow night. But once we get into the new year, temperatures will start to rise and warm weather lovers will rejoice. Highs will be at or above the normal for the first time in several days, generally in the lower to middle 40s (the average high in Beckley this time of the year is 41 degrees).
At the end of the forecast, we’ll be tracking another system that will possibly come into the area on Monday. The track of this next weathermaker is less certain, but it is likely to be to our north, meaning that most of the precipitation will fall as rain. The only potential issue with the system is some of the rain could fall while surface temperatures are below freezing, raising the possibility for freezing rain.
