Hinton, WV (WOAY) A beloved West Virginia coalfield tradition will be celebrated this weekend in Summers County.

The New River Gorge Historical Society will host a community fish fry and historical program on June 13 at the Summers County Memorial Building in downtown Hinton.

The event honors the annual “Miner’s Vacation,” a two-week summer break once observed by coal miners across the New River Gorge region.

The fundraiser will feature a traditional fish dinner, presentations from local historians, and discussions about the role of railroads and coal mining in shaping the region’s history.

Dinner tickets are $15, while the historical presentations are free and open to the public.
