The weekend and beyond: wild weather continues

OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – It has been a windy afternoon around the area, and tonight, the winds continue to be gusty, especially in the northeastern part of the area, even if they’re not as strong as they were earlier in the day.

We can expect the wind speeds and gusts to stay elevated through the rest of the night as low pressure over western New York interacts with high pressure over Minnesota to produce a strong pressure gradient. That’s especially true in cities such as Marlinton, although even higher gusts will be in the relatively unpopulated highest elevation areas of the state.

With the possibility for strong winds, the National Weather Service has extended the High Wind Warning for northwest Pocahontas County until 2 a.m. Saturday. The Wind Advisory for the Route 19 and I-64 corridor was allowed to expire at 8 p.m.

Tomorrow, temperatures will be in the same range as today, mainly in the upper 50s. On the plus side, we’ll lose most of the wind, so it will be a nice start to the weekend. On Sunday, temperatures will warm up into the mid-60s ahead of another cold front that will push into the area as we go into Monday. With the cold front on the way, the winds pick back up, but to a lesser level than they were today.

The beginning of the traditional work week brings another strong cold front into the region. Similar to the last one, this front will have some good moisture to work with on the front end and plenty of cold air to work with on the back end. Monday is going to be an umbrella and rain jacket day.

The cold air arrives during the day on Monday, and temperatures will fall as the day goes on. That will change the rain over to snow.

The European model even wants to bring lake-effect snow into the area on Tuesday, but this is not in our forecast for now. One thing that is in the forecast is some very cold air. Temperatures on St. Patrick’s Day will remain below the freezing mark throughout the day, the first time that’s happened since February 23rd. The good news is that warmer temperatures will end the forecast along with some showers.
