OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – The warmup continued today as temperatures were near or just above the 80-degree mark this afternoon.
The cloud cover rose a bit as well, but there was still plenty of sunshine. Tonight, the skies will be partly cloudy, and the temperatures will be mild, above the normal for the first time in a while. We’ll drop into the lower 60s.
Tomorrow, a front enters the region from the northwest, and it will trigger some showers and storms. Some of the storms will be on the strong side and one or two could become severe. The storms should mainly occur on Thursday afternoon and evening but could last into Friday morning.
If they do become severe, damaging winds and large hail would be the main threats, along with flooding rains.
With the possibility for winds and hail in the forecast, the Storm Prediction Center has placed the entire area in the risk level 1 out of 5 from tomorrow morning until Friday morning. For the possibility for flooding rain, the Weather Prediction Center has placed the area in the risk level 1 out of 4 for the same time period. I think the chance for any severe weather is small, but not zero. There is some fuel for the storms to work with, but it fades quickly and there will have to be storms around to take advantage of the fuel that is there. It looks like the strongest storms will be to the east and southeast of the area. There is plenty of moisture for the storms to work with as well, but the storms should also be quick enough movers to keep flooding chances to a minimum.
The chance for showers and storms will last into our first Fabulous Football Friday for the season, but it will be lower on Friday than it will be tomorrow.
A rain jacket could come in handy if you’re headed out to any games, especially in the southern and eastern portion of the region. Temperatures cool off a bit after the front, but not by much.
The upcoming weekend will be very nice, with mild temperatures and lots of sunshine. Highs will be in the lower to mid-80s, and lows will be in the mid-60s. That trend will continue into next week, until another front comes into the region at the end of the forecast and give us another chance for showers and storms.
