The storm ahead; rainy, windy and much colder

We find ourselves behind a warm front this evening, and you can definitely tell by looking at the temperature map around the area. Beckley was nearly 20 degrees above its average high at 9 p.m.!

Behind the warm front and ahead of the cold front, winds are quite gusty, part of what is helping to give us such warm temperatures.

The cold front will come screaming into the area early tomorrow morning and will bring strong winds in addition to heavy rain.

To our west, the line has produced some really rough weather, with severe thunderstorms and tornado warnings, but we think that we’ll manage to avoid the severe weather. Still, straight-line winds will be quite strong in some spots for a brief period before dying down.

Behind the cold front, winds will stay quite strong, and there are High Wind Warnings and Wind Advisories everywhere around the region.

Not shown on this map of the warnings and advisories is a Winter Weather Advisory for northwest Pocahontas County through 1:00 p.m. Tuesday. Upslope banding will set up there and in parts of Greenbrier County.

That will lead to decent snow totals in those areas.

But for most areas, it’s the liquid equivalent that will be the big story. The small parts of the area that are still experiencing drier-than-normal conditions will pick up beneficial liquid.

Behind the front, temperatures will cool down dramatically. We’ll go from highs in the upper 50s and lower 60s to highs in the upper 20s and lower 30s! The cold air takes us into the first days of the new year.
