Suspect Killed Following Officer-Involved Shooting in Chelyan

Chelyan, WV (WOAY) A stabbing investigation in Kanawha County ended with an officer-involved shooting on Tuesday morning.

Deputies say they responded to a Par Mar convenience store in Chelyan after a man entered the business suffering from an apparent stab wound.

Investigators quickly identified a suspect who had barricaded himself inside a nearby residence.

Authorities say deputies, along with the West Virginia State Police and U.S. Marshals, spent several hours attempting to resolve the situation using less-lethal tactics peacefully.

During the execution of the warrant, K9 Jett was deployed to take the suspect into custody and suffered a stab wound to the head in the struggle.

He was immediately removed from the scene by his handler and transported to a veterinary hospital, where he received emergency medical treatment and is in stable condition.

During the investigation, officers also learned another man inside the home was not being allowed to leave.

When law enforcement attempted to take the suspect into custody, officials say the suspect became aggressive.

An officer discharged a firearm, striking the suspect.

Despite immediate lifesaving efforts, the suspect died at the scene.

The identities of the victim and the suspect have not been released pending notification of family members.

The investigation remains active.
