Sun Eventually Returns, Warm, Then Winter Preview

The stubborn clouds will break around 2:45 p.m. on Saturday but we are in for widespread dense fog early Sunday and then WARM!

SHORT-TERM: The clouds will hang tough until 2:45 p.m. Saturday and then a few bright patches will develop.

Expect dense fog early Sunday with visibility less than 0.50 miles for most of the region. The balance of the day after 10 a.m. will be sunny and warm. The warm theme continues through Monday.

EXTENDED FORECAST: Showers return Tuesday and Wednesday ahead of a cold front. Then, blustery and colder weather is likely Thursday and Friday with flurries. Western Pocahontas County will accumulate about 2.5 inches of snow during this time. The colder than average pattern will then break on Tuesday before Thanksgiving.

If your travels take you into the Northeast, expect lake effect snow in northern Pennsylvania and Upstate New York late next week.

A similar pattern evolved last year in late November and produced snow amounts that will likely mimic the pattern late next week (see below). Notice the Great Lakes snow belts and Tug Hill Plateau had the localized highest amounts.

The meteorological explanation for the transient cold blast is a weakened polar vortex and developing Greenland block that will trigger colder temperatures in the East. The blocking will quickly wane and temperatures will return slightly above average for Thanksgiving weekend.
