Wayne County man sentenced to 5 years in prison in connection with fatal hit and run

Fayette County, WV (WOAY) A Wayne County man is sentenced to five years in prison for a fatal hit-and-run crash on the West Virginia Turnpike.

Fayette County Prosecuting Attorney Anthony Ciliberti Jr. says Anthony W. Hay was sentenced Thursday to the maximum prison term for aggravated vehicular homicide.

Hay was also fined $20,000 and must serve 15 months before becoming eligible for parole.

Investigators say the crash happened in October of 2025, when hay’s commercial box truck struck Jack D. Walter of North Carolina, who was outside his disabled vehicle on the turnpike.

Walter was killed, and authorities say Hay left the scene.

Police used turnpike surveillance and dashcam footage to identify the truck. Investigators say video from the truck showed hay drifting onto the roadway shoulder before striking Walter and his vehicle.

Authorities also say hay attempted to avoid detection after the crash and altered the dates on photographs of deer struck by another vehicle.

The West Virginia State Police investigated the case, which was prosecuted by the Fayette County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
