Strong Storms Today; Drier Pattern Developing

WOAY-TV (Oak Hill, WV): While this morning will be on the calmer side, more showers and storms are expected to develop late this morning through the evening hours. There will be enough available energy in the atmosphere to support the development of strong or severe thunderstorms. The window for severe weather will last from around noon until after sunset. The Storm Prediction Center has issued a Marginal severe weather risk (Dark Green) across a majority of the viewing area. This designation means that the SPC is expecting isolated severe weather.

If storms do reach severe criteria, damaging winds, heavy rain, and small hail are in play. Wind gusts could reach up to 60 miles per hour, which can break off tree branches. Even smaller, weaker trees could be knocked down due to saturated soil in our region. Hail up to pea sized is possible as well. Larger hail and tornadic activity are not very likely. There will be storms and showers overnight. However, with less energy in the atmosphere, the development of severe weather is less likely. Meteorologist Christian Boteler has the latest:

Showers will linger tomorrow morning, but these will be lighter. An umbrella or light rain jacket will be plenty to keep yourself dry during the morning commute. These showers will dissipate late in the morning as high pressure moves into the Great Lakes region. The rainy pattern will give way to a drier pattern for the rest of the extended forecast. The rest of Thursday will feature mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-70s, making for a wonderful evening commute. These nicer conditions will persist into Friday, ending the traditional work week on an spectacular note. Afternoon temperatures will remain in the mid- to upper 70s. Here’s the 7-Day Forecast:

High pressure will linger as multiple centers will pass in and out of the northeastern states, keeping the majority of rainy activity to our south. However, a couple of isolated storms can pop in and out of the southern counties Saturday afternoon. After this rain chance, conditions are trending drier. The mostly sunny skies and milder afternoon temperatures featured this weekend and early next week make for some of the best outdoor weather days of the year. However, drought concerns will return to the forefront of our coverage despite the rain we have gotten over the last week. Even this great pattern of rainfall was not enough to fully eliminate the drought. This drier pattern will continue through the first quarter of June.
