Strong storms possible tomorrow, then cooler

OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – We have plenty of clouds in the skies over southern West Virginia this evening, but no showers. The showers and storms rolled through this morning, with some thunder serving as a natural (and probably unwanted!) alarm clock. The storms were strong in spots, but not severe. More of the same is in the forecast tonight, although I think the thunderstorms will wait until later in the morning than they did this morning. With the cloud cover, lows tonight will be warmer than they were this morning, generally in the upper 50s to around 60 degrees.

Tomorrow, the showers and storms will be persistent, but the strongest storms should come in two movements. The first was the one mentioned above during the morning hours.
The second, possibly stronger, line will come during the afternoon and evening. I say possibly because how strong the storms get will be at least partially driven by the sun. If the sun breaks out, that will destabilize the atmosphere and make the afternoon round of storms stronger. Some of the storms during both events will be strong, and a few may be severe.
If any of the storms do reach severe limits, the main threat is damaging winds. Large hail is also a threat, and even an isolated tornado can’t be ruled out, but these threats are much smaller, especially for tornadoes. The typical flooding we get from heavy rain in a short time is also a possibility, mainly ponding water on roads and standing water in low-lying spots.
Highs tomorrow will be close to the seasonal normal, around 70 degrees.
As the front pushes through, temperatures will cool off for several days running. Highs from Thursday through Sunday will be in the 50s, and we don’t see above normal temperatures anywhere in the latter part of the extended forecast. It will be cold enough on Sunday morning to see frost form. As we start next week, the weather returns, and chances for showers come back into the forecast. It’s not going to be as wet as it will be ahead of this next front, but every drop helps since we are in a severe drought around most of the area at this point. Temperatures rebound a bit and will top out in the lower to middle 60s.
