Storm Possible Friday Then Blistering Heat Wave Ahead

WOAY-TV (Oak Hill, WV): Another gorgeous sunset is in the forecast this evening with patchy fog overnight.

TONIGHT: After a spectacular sunset, a few patches of fog will greet those in the New River valleys by early Thursday.

THURSDAY: A boatload of sun and temperatures warming into the 80s is on tap.

FRIDAY: There is a 30% risk for a gusty thunderstorm north of I-64 between 5-9 p.m. as a cold front passes by the northern Mid-Atlantic. Folks living from Morgantown, W.Va., north to Pittsburgh have a much better chance at more numerous gusty storms.

WEEKEND: After a less humid start to the weekend, temperatures and humidity will get cranking on Father’s Day. The heat index will hit 89-92 degrees Sunday afternoon and gardens will need watering (more effective to water before 9 a.m. or after 6 p.m.).

NEXT WEEK: A heat dome will move right over the East. Heat indices will range from 90-95 degrees in our region to 95-110 degrees along and west of I-79 and along and east of I-81 where Heat Advisories and Excessive Heat Warnings are expected. Light wind will trap pollutants closer to the major cities, so expect poor air quality and Air Quality alerts. Additionally, a flash drought will develop, so be sure to keep watering the garden in the early mornings or late evenings.

WHEN WILL THE HEAT BREAK DOWN AND RAIN RETURN? There is a good signal for the center of the heat ridge to push into the Southwest U.S. between June 22-25. This will allow a push of somewhat cooler air to ride atop the heat ridge and bust the heat wave with potential for gusty thunderstorms. Typically when this type of pattern occurs (reminiscent of late June 2012), the storms don’t produce meaningful rain but have more wind energy instead. Stay tuned.

The 500-mb flow pattern expected between June 22-25 compared to the pattern leading up to the 2012 Derecho.

Temperatures will still be above average (warmer than 80 degrees) but likely not into record territory (90s). June will likely end with mid-80s.
