Star Wars Day honors a franchise that has brought so many memories and different stories to many

OAK HILL, WV (WOAY)- A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away… well, more like 1977. George Lucas created a film called “Star Wars” that became one of the most well-known film franchises in the world.

“‘Star Wars’ is an iconic part of our lives. So many I mean, everybody knows what ‘Star Wars’ is,” said Allen Walker, Owner of Dragon’s Den Gaming. “Started out as a movie that nobody thought was going to go anywhere, and then it became a sensation, and now we have TV shows, multiple movies, 1000s of books, comic series, everything, games, all of it, all based on ‘Star Wars.'”

However, how did May 4th become Star Wars Day? Well, it became that as a play on one of, if not the most famous, quotes from the film “May the Force be with you.” So on Star Wars Day, people say “May the 4th be with you” instead. However, the story of “Star Wars” has shaped many people over the almost 50 years it’s been around.

“As a child who was born in 1970, and the movie actually came out in 1977, it was probably one of the most prolific times of my life because of the simple fact that I wanted to live in a fancy world back in those days. And I saw the movie actually 17 times the theater the year it came out,” explained Scott Olive, a “Star Wars” enthusiast. “It inspired my imagination. It made me want to go out and be these characters. It’s just when I was a kid, me and my friends would play this in our backyard, like I was Chewbacca, or I was Han Solo, we would always fight on whoever we would be. And it just really sparked the imagination. It was it just, it really had us going to just make believe, pretend, just being a world that wasn’t the world we’re in.”

Scott says he hopes those who have never seen it will decide to watch it and escape into another world just like he did as a child.

So what started off as a young filmmaker’s want to “just make films” has turned into a lifetime of memories made and stories to tell.

While today is Star Wars Day, people better beware, as tomorrow is Revenge of the 5th.

Until then, “May the fourth be with you.”
